la citta vita

Urban planner. I travel. I collect case studies. I share. I'm particularly interested in the intersection of the arts and urbanism.

    Münchner Nordheide

Another neighborhood development outside Munich called Nordheide. Similar to Messestadt Riem. Nordheide is a mixed-use area at the Dülferstraße U-Bahn stop. Neighborhood green spaces and a distinctive diagonal promenade make up its form.

Built on a former army barracks and “tank field,” planning for Nordheide began in the 90s. The district now consists of 2,500 dwelling units and student housing for 545 students. Several primary schools and day-care centers are provided along with a youth center, a church, and community center. This mix of publicly subsidized and privately funded apartments and condos is located adjacent to the Mira Shopping Center.

    "New Urban Life" around Munich

La Citta Vita went to Munich and made a visit to Messestadt Riem (Convention City Riem). A new mixed-use suburb of München developed along with the Messe Munich Trade Fair Center. It is one of the largest urban planning projects in Europe.

A main street (Willy-Brandt-Allee) runs through the project area separating the convention facilities to the north from the residential district to the south. The residential community is connected to the new Riem Park (designed by Latitude Nord of Paris) through a series of “green fingers” that stretch into the neighborhood providing open space connections between buildings.

Other amenities include, schools, a church center, a public plaza (Willy-Brandt-Platz), a hotel, a skate park, numerous playgrounds, and the Riem Arcaden shopping center.

This 1383 acres (560 hectares) project was planned on the former airfield of the Munich-Riem_Airport (Flughafen München Riem). It provides housing for 16,000 and 13,000 jobs.

For more information on Messestadt Riem including its “green city” program check out this link. Similar to many European projects, the lack of variety in building design and building height can make for a well organized but monotonous neighborhood. Despite this, Messestadt Riem is a wonderful example of neighborhood development, adaptive reuse, and open space creation and is probably the only new urban development that has its own music video.
